What capital funding opportunities are available to support arts organizations in Europe?
To answer this question, ABA conducted a research project for an ABA member in Ireland, mapping European Union–level and Ireland-based capital funding opportunities relevant to arts and cultural organizations. The research focused on funding streams that align with long-term development plans, including rebuilding sensory and rehearsal spaces, modernizing infrastructure, and improving accessibility.
Key insights from this study include:
EU-Level Opportunities: Multiple EU programs provide funding for arts infrastructure and accessibility projects, particularly those tied to cultural development, inclusion, and innovation. However, these opportunities can be challenging to access: applying in consortia is often required, and projects must typically demonstrate clear pan-European impact.
National & Regional Opportunities: Alongside EU-level programs, Ireland-based funding streams play a central role in supporting cultural capital projects, especially where organizations can demonstrate community benefit and long-term sustainability.
Accessibility & Inclusion Focus: Funders across Europe are increasingly prioritizing projects that expand access, support neurodivergent audiences, and contribute to broader cultural participation goals.
