Aligning Mission, Quality & Financial Sustainability
July 2026
How do multi-venue arts organizations structure, manage, and operate space hire to balance mission, quality, and financial sustainability?
This question, posed by an ABA member, led to interviews with six organizations, mostly within the UK to understand their organizational, operational, and strategic approaches to space utilization.
Main findings include:
Organizations are taking a more strategic approach to space hire: Organizations are positioning commercial hire not as a compromise on mission but as part of what sustains it. The income secures financial stability, and stability is the precondition for mission delivery. The balance between commercial and mission-driven hire varies by organisation.
Successful venue hire requires both a clear strategy and sustained leadership support: The strategy sets the foundation by defining the long-term direction and creating a shared sense of purpose, while leadership sustains organisational buy-in, empowers key staff to drive the strategy forward, and aligns the wider organisation around shared objectives.
As space hire grows in importance, organisations are formalising how events are managed. That work starts with an honest audit of existing spaces, capacity, and constraints, and builds into clear policies, approval pathways, and shared templates for assessing, planning, delivering, and reviewing events.
