Board Governance 2026

Our latest ABA Executive Benchmark explored board governance and operations- including items such as board composition, engagement and overall performance.

Highlights from the survey include:

  • Most organizations have boards between 11-30 members. Single terms for trustees typically last between 3-4 years, with varying policies on the numbers of consecutive terms allowed.

  • Near-even split between organizations that do and don’t have procedures in place to evaluate the performance and involvement of their boards. For those that do, attendee at board meetings is most common criteria for assessment followed by annual fundraising review.

  • Connection to specific sectors and giving capacity are the biggest priorities for board recruitment. Additionally, many organizations have implemented DEIA commitments and adjusted their requirements practices to diversify their boards.

  • For half of our data set, board giving represents between 0-15% of total individual contributed income only.

  • Near-even split between organizations that do and don’t have minimum board giving requirements. For those that do, the minimum requirement is typically below $15,000 annually.

  • Most respondent seem satisfied with overall board performance.
