In a moment when engagement with art is evolving, core audiences are aging, and the role of arts organizations is shifting, ABA’s new major research initiative investigates how the sector can more effectively connect with younger audiences—Millennials and Gen Z (ages 18–45), collectively referred to as the Next Generation.

This data‑driven study challenges long‑held assumptions about who the Next Generation is and replaces myth with evidence. It also serves as a practical resource, offering case examples from arts and culture organizations worldwide that have successfully adapted their strategies.

Through this research, you will be able to:

  • Examine the motivations, interests, and behaviors of younger people—beyond your existing core audiences—when it comes to leisure, arts, and culture.

  • Understand why organizations must begin prioritizing the Next Generation now to ensure long‑term relevance and sustainability.

  • Develop a comprehensive strategy to achieve a “new balance,” placing equal emphasis on engaging the Next Generation alongside the art being presented—supported by actionable case studies and real‑world examples that illustrate what successful organizations are doing today.
