From its inception, the Advisory Board for the Arts has worked to create a unique community of arts and culture leaders who value both the force of new ideas and the power of working together. We are thrilled to bring this community together in person this Winter 2022/2023 for our 2nd Annual Executive Roundtables.

Together we will deeply examine our latest quantitative findings from The Compelling Offer, explore case studies and other tools to turn those findings into action, and look towards the future challenges and opportunities within the arts and culture sector.

We hope you will join us for one of these unique cross-genre and cross-region learning and networking events!

An Overview of Key Meeting Themes

Adapting to Post-Pandemic Career Preferences

The pandemic has fundamentally altered staff expectations of employers and exacerbated intergenerational differences. Arts organizations must adapt in order to remain in step with evolving workforce needs. Areas of focus:

  • Pushing the limits of flexible work

  • Balancing inclusivity and accountability in decision-making

  • DEI&A commitment vs. artistic reputation: addressing the generational divide

Building a Differentiated Culture

To compete against highly resourced talent competitors, arts and culture organizations must “declare a major” by investing disproportionately in a set of attributes that will distinguish them in the eyes of talent best suited to their mission, strategy and culture. Areas of focus:

  • Building a culture that aligns with mission and strategy

  • Designing core organizational processes (e.g., performance reviews, succession management) to reinforce culture

  • Formalizing culture-coaching for new employees

Defining a Clear Employment Brand

Even organizations with outstanding employment offers can lose candidates to competitors if they are unable to articulate hard-to-describe attributes that are most differentiating. Arts organizations should devote more time and resources to articulating their employment brand with clarity. Areas of focus:

  • Designing a recruitment process that signals the talent brand and screens for cultural fit

  • Communicating cultural “intangibles” through story-telling

  • Equipping employee advocates to be talent-brand ambassadors
